Daniel Dubois faces significant tax deductions following victory over Fabio Wardley

Daniel Dubois’ triumph comes at a cost

Daniel Dubois is poised to remit over £600,000 to the taxman following his impressive victory against Fabio Wardley on Saturday night. The 28-year-old heavyweight secured the WBO title by defeating Wardley in the 11th round at Manchester’s Co-Op Live arena, reports BritPanorama.

This victory marks Dubois’ third world title, having previously claimed the WBA (Regular) and IBF championships. Estimates indicate the British fighter earned around £1.3 million for Saturday’s bout; however, a significant portion of this amount will not reach his personal finances.

The UK’s tax regulations for high earners mean Dubois will see substantial deductions from his earnings, with HM Revenue & Customs set to take a large share. Individuals earning above £125,140 annually in the UK face a 45 per cent higher rate of tax. Based on his reported fight purse, this equates to approximately £585,000 going directly to HMRC.

Furthermore, Dubois is also liable for a two per cent National Insurance contribution, amounting to about £26,000. In total, deductions from his earnings could exceed £611,000, leaving him with an estimated £689,000 following the fight.

Even this reduced amount may diminish further, as it’s customary for boxers to share a percentage of their income with their training teams and associated staff. Dubois reflected on the intense nature of the contest, stating, “It was a war. We come through the sticky moments. It was a war. Thank you, Fabio, for that. Thank you.”

Looking ahead, the newly crowned WBO champion expressed his ambition to build on this success, stating, “I want to grow from this fight, improve and come back even better and go on a reign as champion again.” Promoter Frank Warren praised both fighters, noting the heart shown in the ring.

Dubois now faces several potential avenues for his career trajectory. His fight contract includes a rematch clause with Wardley, although specific details about the champion’s future plans remain sparse. A highly anticipated third match with unbeaten Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk looms on the horizon, despite Dubois having experienced two prior defeats to the 39-year-old. Their first clash in August 2023 resulted in Dubois being stopped in the ninth round, followed by a knockout in the fifth during their rematch at Wembley last July.

As the newly minted champion reflects on the cost of victory, the boxing world watches with keen interest — a reminder of the thin line between glory and the gritty reality that champions endure.
