Seven-year-old Cailen Vela dies after battle with cancer

Cailen Vela, a seven-year-old from Fruitport, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday after a three-year struggle with cancer, as announced by his family, reports BritPanorama.

Cailen’s obituary highlighted that “Cancer never defined him; his joy, strength, and light are how he will be remembered.” His family recounted that he faced challenges with a smile, embracing life through adventures such as whale watching in California, camping trips, and spending time with friends, always seeking out excitement and companionship.

Last year, CNN reported on Cailen’s diagnosis of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. The disease was identified during a routine pediatric check-up when doctors suspected an ear infection.

His parents, Aly and Cody Vela, expressed their fears regarding cuts to funding from the Trump administration that supported the National Institutes of Health (NIH). “If the funding got eliminated or cut that would be devastating, because these kids definitely need help in research,” Aly Vela stated at the time, emphasizing the urgent need for support in cancer research.

A KFF Health News analysis demonstrated the adverse effects of sweeping NIH cuts on scientific research funding nationwide, exacerbating challenges for families and research initiatives alike.

Cailen’s funeral is scheduled for May 16, where family and friends are encouraged to wear attire reflecting his passions, including themes from the Tigers, Spiderman, Minecraft, Super Mario, and Disney, signifying a celebration of his vibrant spirit.
