Bayern Munich’s Champions League exit sparks Vincent Kompany’s frustration with officiating

Bayern Munich’s Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain ended in disappointment as they lost 6-5 on aggregate, prompting manager Vincent Kompany to voice his frustration regarding officiating decisions, reports BritPanorama.

The German side struggled significantly during the match, especially after Ousmane Dembélé scored for PSG within three minutes, setting a challenging tone for Bayern. The confrontation culminated in a 1-1 draw in the second leg at the Allianz Arena, but controversy overshadowed the evening.

Kompany was particularly incensed by two contentious handball incidents. Nuno Mendes of PSG escaped a second yellow card for what appeared to be an intentional handball, while a potential penalty was overlooked when João Neves’s arm came into contact with the ball after a clearance from teammate Vitinha.

“We have to look at some of the phases that were decided by the officials across the two games which it’s never an excuse for everything but it matters,” Kompany stated. He pointedly critiqued the officiating, expressing disbelief over why Mendes was not sent off, suggesting that the referee altered his decision upon realising Mendes was already booked.

“I felt he pulled out because he realised he already gave him a yellow and he didn’t want to send him off for that,” Kompany added, highlighting the perceived inconsistencies in officiating.

On the matter concerning Neves, he questioned the rationale behind the decision, stating, “[João Neves’s] hand is in the air, it hits it. Because it’s from his own teammate it’s not a penalty. But if you look at both [situations], a little bit of common sense and it’s just ridiculous.”

Looking forward, PSG manager Luis Enrique now focuses on an eagerly anticipated final against Arsenal, where he will meet compatriot Mikel Arteta. He commended Arsenal’s consistent performance throughout the campaign. “It’s going to be different,” he said, remarking on the Gunners’ impressive form, “They have been performing the whole season at a high level, they were unbelievable.” Enrique reaffirmed his commitment to securing back-to-back European titles.

As the dust settles on this semi-final encounter, the complexities of officiating in high-stakes matches remain under scrutiny, a clear reminder that even at the elite level, man-made judgments can shift the course of sporting history.
