George Russell responds after Miami Grand Prix

George Russell has responded defiantly following a challenging Miami Grand Prix, where he crossed the line more than 43 seconds adrift of Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli, reports BritPanorama.

The British driver now sits 20 points behind the Italian sensation after four rounds of the championship, having entered the season as the bookmakers’ favourite for the title.

Russell’s struggles have coincided with Antonelli’s remarkable form, as the 19-year-old secured victory in the last three consecutive grands prix — a feat unprecedented in Formula 1 history, with no driver before him winning their first three grand prix victories from pole position.

Speaking after Sunday’s race, Russell told Sky Sports F1, “I’ve still got confidence in myself and have also been there. I’ve not forgotten how to drive. It’s just a little bit of a tricky run but we are four races down, a long way to go.” During the race, he made significant alterations to his car setup, adjusting differentials and brake bias to align with settings used by Antonelli throughout the weekend. “It made a bigger impact than I thought,” Russell noted, highlighting improved competitiveness in the race’s closing stages.

The 26-year-old remains confident that fortune will eventually turn in his favour, referencing previous rounds in China and Japan where he believes he had race-winning pace but faced adverse circumstances. “I could be standing here now with three very different results from the last three races,” he reflected. “But that’s Formula 1 sometimes.”

In the wake of the race, former world champion Jenson Button remarked that Russell might have been surprised by Antonelli’s performances but expects him to respond strongly at the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix later this month. Sky Sports F1 pundit Naomi Schiff suggested Russell might take comfort from Antonelli’s occasional errors, such as a track limits penalty during Saturday’s Sprint. She observed, “Maybe George’s consistency is what helps him out,” while acknowledging the challenge posed by his teammate’s raw speed.

As the season progresses, Russell will need to adapt swiftly if he hopes to close the gap on Antonelli. The competitive landscape of Formula 1 continues to evolve, a reminder of how swiftly fortunes can shift in the relentless pursuit of excellence on the track.
