Guardiola issues warning to Manchester City squad ahead of Christmas
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has taken proactive measures ahead of the holiday season, warning his players that anyone returning from their brief holiday break in poor physical condition will be excluded from the squad for the upcoming Premier League match against Nottingham Forest, reports BritPanorama.
This directive follows a convincing 3-0 victory over West Ham, marking City’s fifth consecutive league win. The result temporarily placed City at the top of the table, applying pressure on league leaders Arsenal. However, Guardiola expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s overall performance, highlighting the need for improved standards.
Following the win, Guardiola refused to grant his players a rest day, making it clear that he expects fitness levels to remain high during the festive period. He stated, “The players asked me to take a day off. I said, ‘No because you didn’t play good enough’,” reinforcing the importance of maintaining focus and discipline.
As the club enjoys its first midweek break since the international fixtures in November, Guardiola plans to use this time wisely, intending to visit his father in Barcelona. The squad will need to return in peak condition ahead of their matchup at the City Ground, which is significant given the demands of the league.
He elaborated on the importance of this fitness regime, stating, “I have to make a selection for (December) 27 against Nottingham Forest… Imagine one player and now he’s perfect but he will arrive with three kilos more. He will (stay) in Manchester. He will not travel to Nottingham Forest.” Despite his concerns about fitness levels, Guardiola noted that he was satisfied with the squad’s physical condition but was more perturbed by other aspects of the game against West Ham.
Reflecting on the busy schedule, he acknowledged the need for players to enjoy time with their families during the holidays: “The more they arrive in the right moment (the better). The moment of the game they will be fresh in the legs.” Guardiola’s approach highlights the fine balance managers must maintain between maintaining discipline and allowing players a breather during a demanding schedule, particularly during festive celebrations. As the season progresses, ensuring that players arrive ready to compete will be critical for City’s title aspirations.
