Avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama dies at 97

Japanese avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama, known for her obsessive dot-covered paintings and pumpkin motifs, has died at the age of 97, reports BritPanorama.

The announcement on her official website stated that she passed away on August 14, though the cause of death has not been disclosed.

Kusama, who grew frustrated with the constraints of Japanese society, relocated to New York at the age of 27. She quickly gained recognition with her distinctive works, often inspired by her lifelong experiences of hallucinations involving flashing lights, dots, and flowers.

Beyond her artwork, Kusama was also known for her anti-war activism during the 1960s and for influencing many artists, including Andy Warhol. She was candid about her mental health struggles, noting that her experiences in New York heightened her neuroses.

In the late 1970s, upon returning to Japan, she voluntarily entered a mental health facility and continued to live there, commuting daily to her nearby studio. In a 2017 interview, she remarked, “I still see hallucinations even now,” adding that “dots come flying everywhere — on my dress, the floor, things I’m carrying, throughout the house, the ceiling. And I paint them.”

Kusama’s influence and unique approach to art have left an indelible mark on the contemporary art scene. As the art world reflects on her legacy, her vision seems set to endure, continuing to inspire future generations of artists.
