Ugandan king Oyo Nyimba dies at 34
KAMPALA — Oyo Nyimba, a Ugandan king who became the world’s youngest reigning monarch when he took the crown in 1995, has died aged 34, the prime minister of his kingdom announced, reports BritPanorama.
Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV was the King of Tooro, a small kingdom in Uganda’s west near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The king died at around 10:00 p.m. local time on Thursday; however, the cause of his death has not been revealed.
He was crowned at just three years old on September 12, 1995, following the death of his father, Rukirabasaija Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. Oyo’s political power was largely symbolic, yet he wielded significant cultural and social influence within his community.
Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, the prime minister of the kingdom, expressed deep sorrow in a post on X, declaring, “It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty the Omukama of Tooro.” Akiiki noted that Oyo had been receiving treatment in the U.S. shortly before the announcement. He added that the king, who was unmarried, had left an heir, ensuring that “continuity of the Crown is assured.”
His death has sparked widespread grief across social media platforms in Uganda, with notable reflections on his legacy. Bobi Wine, the country’s leading opposition figure, lamented the news with a post stating, “Most devastating news! May His Majesty the King’s soul rest in eternal peace.”
In April, in a message celebrating the King’s birthday, Akiiki affirmed, “Our King is not distant from the realities of his people; he is part of this generation, part of this ecosystem, growing, learning, and leading… His youth is not a limitation; it is a strength.” The future of the kingdom now hangs in a balance as Tooro reflects on a leader who combined both royal heritage with modern sensibilities.
