Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk acknowledges struggles amidst defeat

Liverpool Captain Virgil van Dijk acknowledged the defending champions are struggling for consistency whilst insisting team spirit remains strong following Saturday’s dramatic 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth, reports BritPanorama.

The loss proved detrimental to Liverpool’s Champions League ambitions as Amine Adli netted the decisive goal in the closing moments, dashing the hopes of the away supporters. The Reds did momentarily seem poised to equalise through a striking effort from Dominik Szoboszlai, but Adli’s late intervention saw them succumb to yet another setback.

Arne Slot’s side has struggled this calendar year, managing only four points out of a potential 15 and now trails Arsenal, landing them in contention for the top-four finish.

In the aftermath, Van Dijk addressed the media, affirming, “I don’t think there’s any question about our togetherness,” while also recognising the urgent need for improved consistency. “But the consistency that we’re looking for, that’s something that still needs to be found. That’s the reality,” he noted.

Van Dijk assessed his personal performance amid challenging wet and windy conditions on the south coast, claiming he was impeded before Adli’s critical strike. He stated, “What I felt on the pitch was that I was clearly blocked, but obviously the ref and VAR don’t give it and that’s something we then have to accept. In my opinion, I was blocked.”

The captain elaborated, “The first goal, it was a difficult ball to judge during the circumstances – the wind was very tricky.” He also mentioned a critical moment when the team conceded two goals in rapid succession, asserting, “But to concede those two goals in a short period is obviously not good at all.”

On the opposite side, Bournemouth has managed to gather seven points from their last nine available following a challenging 11-match winless streak, alleviating some of their relegation concerns as they rise in the standings.

In football, such unexpected twists serve to remind fans how swiftly fortunes can change, echoing the notion that even the most accomplished squads can find themselves grappling with inconsistency when it matters most. The pursuit of stability remains paramount for Liverpool as they look to recalibrate their season.
