Tony Jacklin backs Tiger Woods for Ryder Cup captaincy

Tony Jacklin believes Tiger Woods is destined to become the next US Ryder Cup captain and says the golf icon will ultimately see it as his “duty” to lead Team USA, reports BritPanorama.

The Ryder Cup legend indicates that the primary consideration ahead of the 2027 contest is whether Woods is ready to face the challenge of reclaiming the trophy from Europe, who are seen as the overwhelming favourites.

Jacklin stated, “I think the big story is, does Tiger really want to expose himself and do it (captain USA)? Tiger must know that, going into the matches in Ireland, Europe’s going to be the overwhelming favourite. So does he want to put himself up to get his backside kicked?”

He further emphasized that, if Woods were to take on the role successfully, “he’d be King of the hill forever.” The discussion about the captaincy comes amid anticipation for the next tournament, which will take place in Ireland.

Jacklin also voiced support for Luke Donald as the right candidate to lead Team Europe in 2027, calling him “the obvious choice.” He acknowledged Donald’s success in previous captaincy stints, remarking that “he’s done such an excellent job over the past two years.”

Reflecting on the pressures of captaining a Ryder Cup team, Jacklin noted, “You can’t play for these players, but you can become their friend. You become simpatico with the pressure that they get put under and use all of your influence to help them as much as you can.”

As the competition draws closer, the dynamics of leadership and unity within both teams will likely play a crucial role in the outcome, especially considering Europe’s recent successes in the event.

In the end, it illustrates not just the personal ambitions of these golfing icons but also the historical weight of leadership in one of sport’s most prestigious tournaments — a blend of legacy, challenge, and the ever-present quest for supremacy in golf.
