Tommy Fleetwood’s family escapes Dubai amid ongoing conflict
Tommy Fleetwood expressed his immense relief after his wife Clare and their three children returned safely to Cheshire following a harrowing escape from Dubai, where tensions between Iran and the UAE have escalated. Their timely departure on Wednesday coincided with an incident at the airport shortly after their aircraft took off, reports BritPanorama.
The family, who had lived in Dubai for four years, managed to secure seats on a flight after experiencing the cancellation of an earlier one. Just as they departed, Dubai faced renewed Iranian drone strikes, which have targeted the city for nearly two weeks, causing significant damage to hotels and landmarks from intercepting missiles.
Fleetwood commented, “They got lucky getting out because they got out on the flight and then something happened at the airport while they were in the air.” This incident has left tens of thousands of British nationals stranded, with ongoing hostilities jeopardising commercial aviation.
Fleetwood acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, highlighting the strain it placed on his family. He expressed gratitude towards local authorities for their efforts during the crisis, stating, “It’s just unsettling for everyone, really. But I must say, the nation and the leaders have done an amazing job of making everybody feel safe and well protected.”
Despite the alarming backdrop of conflict, Fleetwood managed a solid performance at The Players Championship in Florida, carding an opening three-under-par 69. He reflected on how off-course distractions had offered “no excuse” for past performances, yet he demonstrated focus and resilience under pressure, finishing just two strokes behind early leaders.
The duality of his family’s safe return alongside the turmoil in Dubai serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable intersection between personal life and global events. For Fleetwood, as he navigates the complexities of sport and family, this period reflects both the challenges and triumphs that define not only his career but also the human experience amidst adversity.
