Tensions rise at PSG as Ukrainian and Russian players avoid interaction ahead of final

PSG’s Champions League final overshadowed by player tensions

Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League final preparations were overshadowed by a reported bitter dispute between two of their key players, Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov and Ukrainian centre-back Ilya Zabarnyi, stemming from the ongoing conflict between their home nations, reports BritPanorama.

According to BILD, the pair share no personal relationship whatsoever due to their respective nationalities. The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has created significant tension, complicating their interactions as teammates at the French club.

Despite this internal strife, PSG entered the showpiece event at the Stade de France as defending champions. They had lifted the trophy for the first time last season, but tensions reportedly manifested during their preparations.

Sources indicate that during an internal practice match, the duo declined to shake hands and have maintained physical distance in training sessions. This behaviour has prompted intervention from PSG’s management, highlighting the impact of external geopolitical conflicts on team dynamics.

Zabarnyi, who joined PSG in a significant transfer after interest from Tottenham, has spoken candidly about the situation between the two players. He stated: “In my country, a full-scale war has been raging for four years.” Meanwhile, Safonov has limited communications strictly to professional matters and remarked, “I won’t” when asked to comment on Zabarnyi’s statements.

Through these challenges, PSG managed to successfully defend their European crown against Arsenal, in a final that culminated in a dramatic penalty shootout after a closely contested match. Arsenal’s Gabriel became the unfortunate figure, sending his crucial spot-kick sailing over the crossbar, securing the title for PSG once more.

The victory marked back-to-back Champions League triumphs for the club, who previously claimed their maiden title with a 5-0 victory over Inter Milan. The juxtaposition of success on the pitch against the backdrop of national tension underscores the intricate ways in which sport can reflect deeper social divides, leaving the fans to ponder the human stories behind the headlines.
