British-born Seydou Traore selected by Miami Dolphins in NFL Draft
British-born American football star Seydou Traore has made history by being selected by the Miami Dolphins in the NFL Draft, reports BritPanorama.
The Dolphins selected the tight end at pick 180. At 23 years of age, Traore, who grew up in London and represented the London Warriors during his teenage years, brings a blend of French-Algerian and Ivorian heritage to this significant achievement.
His selection marks a milestone for British American football, illustrating that homegrown talent can rise through the domestic pathway to reach the sport’s highest level. Traore joined the NFL Academy when it launched in 2019, becoming part of its inaugural cohort before pursuing his professional ambitions across the Atlantic.
After his time with the academy programme, which is now based in Loughborough, Traore moved to the United States to continue his development through high school football in Florida. His potential earned him a college scholarship at Arkansas State in 2021, where he began honing his skills at the collegiate level.
In a notable turn in his career, he later transferred to Mississippi State, where he continued to develop as a player. Traore also participated in the NFL’s International Player Pathway (IPP) programme this year, further showcasing his abilities to professional scouts. This varied path contrasts with fellow 2019 academy member Travis Clayton, who left the London-based programme early before achieving his draft selection in 2024.
During the announcement in Pittsburgh, Efe Obada, a former Warriors player and the first IPP participant to feature in the NFL, took to the stage to reveal Miami’s decision. “This isn’t just another name on a card, this is living proof that the dream is possible,” said Obada, who has closely followed Traore’s journey.
Across 48 college matches, Traore amassed 131 receptions for 1,482 yards, scoring ten touchdowns, with five of those occurring in his final season. Standing at six feet four inches and weighing 244 pounds, he possesses the physical attributes necessary for professional play. Miami’s general manager, Jon-Eric Sullivan, highlighted Traore as “a raw, athletic ball of clay” who has significant growth potential.
Sullivan emphasized that Traore’s relatively short time playing football added to his intrigue as a draft pick, stating, “We view him as a player who’s ascending, whose best ball is in front of him, and who can create challenges for defenses in the future.” The Dolphins’ decision reflects a growing recognition of the potential within British football circles, spotlighting Traore’s remarkable journey from grassroots play to the NFL.
