Ruben Amorim emerges as potential candidate for Tottenham amid mounting pressure on Thomas Frank

Ruben Amorim a candidate to replace Thomas Frank at Tottenham, says Sol Campbell

Sol Campbell believes Tottenham are “probably” already holding discussions with Ruben Amorim about potentially taking over from Thomas Frank at the north London club, reports BritPanorama.

The former Spurs defender suggested the Portuguese coach would be an ideal candidate to succeed Frank, who is facing increasing pressure as his team sits in 14th position in the Premier League. Spurs’ form has been concerning, recently exacerbated by a disappointing exit from the FA Cup against Aston Villa.

Speaking to Sky Bet, Campbell stated: “They’ll be looking at him. They’re probably talking to him now; that wouldn’t surprise me. I don’t think he’ll go back to Portugal.” He emphasized that Tottenham will be actively exploring the possibility of bringing Amorim on board.

Amorim’s recent departure from Manchester United came after a turbulent tenure that saw the club finish 15th in the Premier League during his first season in charge, despite considerable investment exceeding £200 million. His time at Old Trafford was marked by poor results and a reported fallout with director of football Jason Wilcox.

The 40-year-old had previously enjoyed success in Portugal, winning two league championships with Sporting Lisbon, leaving many surprised by his struggles in English football. Campbell noted the challenges of managing a club like Tottenham, remarking that Frank, despite being a quality manager, is under scrutiny that differs markedly from his time at Brentford: “Pressure exists everywhere at the highest level, but at Tottenham it comes at you in different ways,” he explained.

Reflecting on Amorim’s time at United, Campbell criticized his approach as “naive”, suggesting he underestimated the demands of managing a historic and high-profile club. He stated, “He didn’t realise how massive Manchester United is. It’s a gigantic club. It’s one of the biggest, iconic clubs in the world. How are you going to control that? That’s nonsense.”

In the complex world of football management, the dynamics of expectation and history cannot be underestimated. The looming question for Tottenham is whether Amorim can navigate those very waters that claimed the tenure of his predecessor.
