Ruben Amorim sacked by Manchester United after critical remarks

Ruben Amorim has been sacked by Manchester United, just 24 hours after the 40-year-old took aim at the club’s hierarchy following the club’s 1-1 draw with Leeds on Sunday, reports BritPanorama.

The Red Devils appointed the Portuguese coach in November 2024, following the departure of Erik ten Hag. However, results during his tenure have been largely underwhelming, and after the recent match, Amorim suggested he had not received adequate support behind the scenes.

Following discussions with United’s chiefs, Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada, where tensions were reportedly high, Amorim was informed of his dismissal. The club announced that Darren Fletcher would take charge of the team on an interim basis for their upcoming match against Burnley.

The official club statement confirmed: “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United. Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May. With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.”

The club thanked Amorim for his contributions and wished him well for the future. Fletcher, previously a director and currently overseeing the Under-18s, will take the reins as interim manager.

While there is no clear frontrunner for a permanent replacement, speculation includes Barcelona’s Xavi Hernandez, who is said to be admired by Berrada. Other candidates under consideration are Oliver Glasner of Crystal Palace and Aston Villa’s Unai Emery, although any moves for these individuals may have to wait until the season concludes.

Amorim’s post-match comments established a clear desire for more authority in decision-making at the club, as he stated, “I just want to say I came here to be the manager, not to be the coach.” He further emphasised the need for all departments within the club to fulfil their roles effectively.

This situation serves as yet another reminder of the complexities involved when club management and coaching philosophies diverge, leaving both the team and its fans seeking clarity amid uncertainty.
