Rory McIlroy wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year award
Rory McIlroy secured the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year award, overcoming Ellie Kildunne and Lando Norris to take the top prize, reports BritPanorama.
The Northern Irish golfer had a remarkable 2025, highlighted by winning The Masters, a major title that had previously eluded him throughout his career. This victory marked a significant milestone, as it enabled McIlroy to achieve a career Grand Slam, making him one of only six individuals in history to claim all four major championships.
His win at Augusta was particularly dramatic, as McIlroy triumphed in a playoff against Englishman Justin Rose. After sinking the decisive putt, he fell to his knees, donning the iconic Green Jacket, a symbol of his achievement.
Beyond The Masters, the 36-year-old played a pivotal role in Team Europe’s success at the Ryder Cup, where his teammates triumphed over Team USA at Bethpage Black, New York, amidst challenging conditions. McIlroy also clinched victories at the Players Championship and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, in addition to securing a seventh Race to Dubai title.
With his successes, McIlroy became the first golfer to win the SPOTY award since Sir Nick Faldo in 1989. Despite a commendable performance, Kildunne, who helped England clinch the rugby World Cup, finished as the runner-up, while Norris, who won the Formula One World Championship, placed third.
Commenting on his achievement at Media City in Salford, McIlroy expressed gratitude to his fellow finalists and acknowledged the hard work that has driven his success. “2025 has been the year I made my dreams come true,” he remarked, reflecting on his extraordinary season.
