Ralf Schumacher advises Lewis Hamilton to consider retirement after struggles with Ferrari

Ralf Schumacher suggests Lewis Hamilton should retire after 2026

Ralf Schumacher believes Lewis Hamilton should consider retiring from Formula 1 at the conclusion of the 2026 season. The former Williams driver expressed doubts about Hamilton’s ability to outperform teammate Charles Leclerc throughout an entire campaign, despite Hamilton’s improved performance this year, reports BritPanorama.

On the Sky Germany podcast, Backstage Boxengasse, Schumacher stated, “Hamilton is in a better position again this year. But over the course of the season, he won’t stand a chance against Leclerc.” This assertion comes as a bold statement regarding a driver who has secured more titles than almost any competitor in Formula 1 history.

Schumacher did not limit his remarks to Hamilton; he also argued that Fernando Alonso should retire. He suggested that both racing legends have had their time in the spotlight and should step aside to allow younger drivers the opportunity to take the helm.

“Hamilton and Alonso have had a wonderful time in Formula 1. But now it’s time for both of them to vacate their cockpits at the end of the year and give young people a chance,” he explained. While Hamilton and Alonso collectively boast nine world championships, they are now in their forties and facing challenges with their current teams.

This season has proved particularly troublesome for Alonso’s Aston Martin team, which has struggled with vehicle handling issues throughout 2026. As for Hamilton, he has yet to secure a Grand Prix victory since joining Ferrari, a team that has faced its own difficulties in maintaining pace and consistency.

Schumacher has suggested Oliver Bearman, the emerging Haas driver who recently turned 21 and is part of Ferrari’s driver academy, should be the one to replace Hamilton. “Oliver Bearman deserves the chance to sit in a Ferrari,” Schumacher asserted.

Moreover, he believes Bearman could not only fill Hamilton’s shoes but could also rival Leclerc if given the chance. “I also believe that, if he gets the chance, he’ll even pose a challenge to Charles Leclerc. I’m pretty sure of that. So I’d say he’s actually better,” he added, a statement that underscores Bearman’s potential in the sport.

Hamilton, who has consistently rebuffed retirement suggestions, maintains his passion for racing and belief in future success. While critics have pointed to his challenges, the seven-time world champion has emphasized that few can match his accomplishments. Notably, Hamilton reportedly has a contract for 2027 should he choose to continue, leaving the ultimate decision in his hands.

As the debate about retirement lingers, the realities of Formula 1 persist; from Hamilton’s illustrious career to the rising stars eager to claim their place on the grid, the sport continues to embody a dynamic interplay between legacy and the next generation.
