Portugal’s World Cup campaign commenced with an emotional tribute to Diogo Jota during their opening match against DR Congo, reports BritPanorama.
In a poignant moment, Jota’s parents, Isabel and Joaquim Silva, attended the match as guests of the Portuguese Football Federation, visibly moved as the screens displayed images of their late son. Jota, along with his brother Andre Silva, tragically died in a car accident last year, preventing him from participating in the 2022 World Cup due to injury.
Prior to the match, every member of the Portuguese squad donned commemorative wristbands bearing Jota’s name, a gesture organised by Prime Minister Luis Montenegro. Midfielder Vitinha elaborated on the origin of the tribute, stating, “They made sure that it was a wristband that we could wear on the pitch.” He noted the affection with which the squad received the wristbands, reinforcing their commitment to honouring Jota’s memory.
Portugal’s head coach, Roberto Martinez, had previously posthumously included Jota as an honorary squad member. At Jota’s funeral last summer, many team members attended to pay their respects, although captain Cristiano Ronaldo chose to stay away to maintain the focus on the service itself. Jota made a significant impact during his time at Liverpool, with 123 appearances yielding 47 goals and contributing to the club’s Premier League title triumph in 2025.
Scotland captain Andy Robertson, a former teammate at Liverpool, promised Jota’s widow, Rute Cardoso, that he would carry both their dreams to the World Cup. Cardoso articulated her thoughts in a letter published by FIFA, expressing gratitude for Robertson representing Jota’s memory on the grand stage.
