Pep Guardiola to serve two-match touchline suspension

Pep Guardiola is set to serve a two-match touchline suspension following his sixth booking of the campaign during Manchester City’s 3-1 FA Cup triumph at St James’ Park, reports BritPanorama.

The City manager will miss the upcoming Premier League fixture against West Ham and the FA Cup quarter-final tie. However, Guardiola will be able to take his place on the touchline for the Carabao Cup Final against Arsenal, as League Cup fixtures operate under separate disciplinary regulations.

Guardiola’s booking came during the second half of the match after he reacted strongly to a challenge by Kieran Trippier on winger Jeremy Doku. Guardiola confronted fourth official Lewis Smith, believing a foul should have been awarded, prompting referee Sam Barrott to issue him a yellow card. The situation escalated post-match, leading to City staff intervening to restrain Guardiola from approaching the match officials.

“When Jeremy Doku dribbles Trippier and goes alone to the box and is being pulled from behind, I’m not asking for a yellow card but it’s a foul,” Guardiola explained, insisting on the merit of his team’s claims. He acknowledged his disciplinary record, stating, “We have the record of the manager with the most yellow cards. I want all records and now I have it.”

Guardiola expressed his discontent at the impending suspension, joking about the situation: “Two game ban now and I will go on holidays the next two games. Oh my god. Oh my god. There are things after 10 years I cannot understand. Review the action.” His frustration reflects the tension that often surrounds high-stakes matches and the scrutiny that managers face in the Premier League.

The current regulations stipulate that Premier League managers are suspended upon accumulating three yellow cards, a rule extending to FA Cup matches but not to Carabao Cup fixtures. Under this framework, Guardiola’s threshold for a two-match ban was lowered from eight cautions to six, a number he has reached this season. If he were to receive three more bookings, his suspension would extend to three games, and collecting 12 yellow cards would result in a misconduct charge.

This situation underscores the increasing intensity of competition in the Premier League, where managers’ emotions can influence their teams, and disciplinary actions become a pivotal aspect of the campaign. As City continues to pursue multiple trophies this season, Guardiola’s absence in key matches could prove significant in their title aspirations.
