Oscar Pistorius reflects on life two years after prison release, living in isolation

Oscar Pistorius, the former Paralympian, has resumed life outside prison after being released on parole in January 2024, yet he has largely remained out of the public eye since. In February 2013, Pistorius was charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, an incident that shocked the world, reports BritPanorama.

Pistorius has consistently claimed he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder on the night of the shooting. Initially convicted of manslaughter, his sentence was later adjusted to murder, a decision welcomed by Steenkamp’s parents, June and Barry. Following his release after nearly a decade, Pistorius is subjected to conditions that restrict his media interactions and require him to reside in the Waterkloof district of Pretoria, in a fortified home owned by his uncle, Arnold.

Since his release, reports indicate Pistorius seldom leaves his residence, relying on visits from family. His house is heavily secured, reflecting the family’s concern about potential backlash. He is also mandated to engage in therapy and educational programs focusing on gender-based violence and anger management, as well as to adhere to a curfew and comply with unannounced visits from officials to ensure he is following the conditions of his parole.

Speculation surrounds his post-incarceration life, including claims of weight gain and a new relationship with Rita Greyling, a business consultant. Publicly, he is said to maintain a low profile, attending church services where he avoids the spotlight. In a notable return to athletics, Pistorius participated in an Ironman 70.3 triathlon in Durban, finishing in 555th place.

For the Steenkamp family, the aftermath of their loss continues to pose challenges. Following the death of Reeva’s father in September 2023, Reeva’s mother, June, has also faced health issues, with the family opting to keep details private. This ongoing narrative of the Pistorius case serves as a stark reminder of unresolved grief and complex human experiences surrounding violence and its repercussions.
