Newcastle held to draw by late Barcelona penalty in Champions League first leg

Lamine Yamal’s late penalty hands Barcelona a draw at Newcastle

Lamine Yamal broke Newcastle hearts with the final kick of the match, converting a 96th-minute penalty to snatch a 1-1 draw for Barcelona in their Champions League last-16 first leg at St James’ Park, reports BritPanorama.

The Spanish teenager kept his cool from the spot, sending Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way after Malick Thiaw had needlessly brought down Dani Olmo deep into added time. It was a devastating blow for Eddie Howe’s side, who had been just seconds away from claiming a famous victory over the five-time European champions.

The result means Barcelona head into next week’s return leg as favourites to reach the quarter-finals. Harvey Barnes had sent St James’ Park into raptures just four minutes from time when he finished off Jacob Murphy’s cross with a clever first-time strike, putting Newcastle in a strong position late in the match.

The atmosphere on Tyneside was electric throughout the evening, with fireworks lighting up the sky before kick-off and a banner in the Gallowgate End proclaiming: “Geordie boys are taking over, Budapest awaits for me.” However, Thiaw’s rash challenge on Olmo proved incredibly costly for the Magpies, with Italian referee Marco Guida pointing straight to the spot as the clock ticked into the sixth minute of stoppage time.

Up stepped Yamal, who had been kept remarkably quiet in open play throughout the evening by Newcastle’s determined defending. The Spain international showed nerves of steel, coolly dispatching the penalty to Ramsdale’s left while the goalkeeper dived the other way. It was a brutal sucker punch for Newcastle, who had done everything right until those final agonising seconds.

Newcastle had been the better side for much of the contest and will feel hard done by with just a point to show for their efforts. Former player Tino Asprilla, whose stunning hat-trick secured a memorable 3-2 win over Barcelona in 1997, was watching from the stands as Howe’s men aimed to write their own chapter in the club’s European history.

The Magpies now face a daunting trip to the Nou Camp next Wednesday evening, knowing they must avoid defeat to progress. Before that, Newcastle travel to Chelsea on Saturday, preparing for the crucial second leg in Spain where Barcelona will be waiting to finish the job.

In the grand tapestry of European football, this encounter will serve as a vivid reminder of how fine the margins can be, illustrating just how quickly dreams can shift to despair within the confines of a single match. The Magpies’ resolve, however, could yet spark a resurgence, as they brace for the next act in their European narrative.
