Mother of Cheltenham jockey makes playful dating plea after his breakthrough victory

Cheltenham jockey’s maiden win sparks mother’s light-hearted plea

The mother of Cheltenham jockey Tom Bellamy made a light-hearted request for someone to date her son shortly after he secured his maiden victory at the festival on Thursday, reports BritPanorama.

Tom Bellamy, 31, rode the 40-1 outsider White Noise to an unexpected victory in the Ryanair Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle, overcoming odds-on favourite Bambino Fever in the opening contest of day three at Prestbury Park.

Speaking trackside to ITV Racing’s Matt Chapman, Sue Bellamy expressed her delight before playfully turning matchmaker. She remarked, “It’s what dreams are made of. Big price, great for the yard, the lads, lasses, everybody. And for the mother who has to put up with him on the way home if it has gone badly.”

When Chapman referenced a previous conversation about what the win might bring, she quipped, “A girlfriend, maybe? Anybody out there? He’s a nice lad.”

The jockey appeared visibly overwhelmed following his breakthrough success, struggling to contain his emotions during the post-race interview. Bellamy told ITV Racing, “I’ve worked my whole life for this day. I’m genuinely speechless, I cannot believe it.”

He praised the performance of the filly and acknowledged his support team, adding, “A great performance from a really likeable filly. I’m delighted for the team at home. This tops my whole career, not just this season.”

Significantly, Thursday’s victory marks an important milestone for Bellamy, whose father, Robert, was also a jockey. He noted, “I’m nearly crying here. I bunked off school as a kid to come and watch the Cheltenham Festival and I can’t believe I’m walking around here after winning.”

Bellamy’s appeal for romance stands out against the backdrop of his past, where he himself acknowledged a wilder lifestyle. He reflected, “I’ll be honest, in my younger days I probably didn’t take it seriously enough. I was a bit of a party animal, a bit of a playboy, just young and immature.”

The jockey’s journey to this triumph has been fraught with challenges. In 2018, he faced suspension from riding at Cheltenham after failing a breath test. More recently, he suffered a broken wrist after a fall at last year’s Grand National.

Despite challenging weather conditions, including rain and winds reaching 50mph, the day’s racing attracted a number of celebrity attendees. Princess Anne, alongside Zara and Mike Tindall, was present, while actors Danny Dyer and James Nesbitt also attended, with Dyer celebrating White Noise’s victory.

This Cheltenham Festival is witnessing fluctuating attendance figures, with 46,317 attendees on Ladies Day, an increase from last year’s 41,941. Overall participation has declined since the post-pandemic peak of 280,627 in 2022.

As the festival continues, this victory serves as a reminder of the often unpredictable nature of horse racing, where fortunes can shift within moments — a reality both thrilling and humbling for those involved.
