Mikel Arteta praises Arsenal's Max Dowman, likening him to Lionel Messi after new contract signing

Max Dowman commits future to Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has likened teenage prodigy Max Dowman to Lionel Messi following confirmation that the 16-year-old will commit his future to the north London club, reports BritPanorama.

The English youngster has secured a pre-agreement with the Gunners that will convert into a full professional contract upon his 17th birthday on December 31.

Dowman burst onto the scene during Arsenal’s comprehensive 5-0 victory over Leeds in August, making his first-team bow at just 15 years and 234 days old. The teenager then etched his name into club history by becoming the youngest player ever to start a match for Arsenal, delivering an impressive display in a Carabao Cup triumph against Brighton at the Emirates in October.

His remarkable rise continued the following month when he entered the fray as a substitute during Arsenal’s victory away to Slavia Prague, making him the first 15-year-old ever to feature in Champions League competition. During the current campaign, Dowman has made five first-team appearances, showcasing his potential at the highest level.

However, Dowman has been unavailable for selection for approximately two months due to an ankle problem that has halted his momentum. Speaking on Friday, Arteta said: “What he has done with us, me personally, I haven’t seen before. Only with a guy that used to play in Barcelona – but maybe not even that.” He further praised Dowman’s charisma and ability to remain composed in challenging situations, stating, “It’s now down to him and us to build an amazing career.”

Arteta also highlighted the need to manage his squad effectively as the season progresses. He remarked that current Premier League squad regulations necessitate leaving out two or three players, which impacts both players and team dynamics. “I beg them, like it is in the Champions League, (to change it), because it’s much better to manage the squad, to maintain the value of the players and to maintain the mental health of the players,” he added.

Arsenal currently sits four points clear of Manchester City in the title race, and Arteta emphasized that despite the competitive landscape, he can maintain a strong relationship with Pep Guardiola as both clubs vie for the championship.

In an environment where young talents emerge alongside seasoned professionals, Dowman’s journey serves as a compelling narrative. It underlines the unpredictability of football and the fine balance between promise and pressure that young athletes must navigate in the pursuit of greatness.
