Verstappen secures pole position in Abu Dhabi, Norris in second

Max Verstappen clinched pole position with an impressive qualifying lap in Abu Dhabi, positioning Lando Norris to start his championship bid from second on the grid, reports BritPanorama.

Verstappen expertly navigated the 21 corners of the Yas Marina Circuit, leading his first run in the decisive Q3 with a time that was 0.327 seconds faster than Oscar Piastri and nearly half a second ahead of Norris.

Although the McLaren duo improved their times on their final laps, with Norris edging past Piastri to claim the front row, Verstappen managed to enhance his lead, finishing the session 0.201 seconds clear of Norris, who was followed closely by Piastri, just 0.230 seconds behind.

This outcome positions all three world championship contenders in close proximity as they head into the decisive race on Sunday. Norris can secure his first world title by finishing third, irrespective of Verstappen’s final position, but heads into the race anxious, as Verstappen trails by just 12 points and Piastri is 16 points behind.

In reflecting on his performance, Norris expressed his disappointment at not securing pole, stating, “The time will come on that, but for now I am disappointed not to be on pole. I will try and win tomorrow and that is the goal.”

Verstappen also acknowledged the competitive environment, mentioning, “Let’s see what we can do. I will try to win the race but we need a bit of luck with what is happening behind us.”

Notably, George Russell’s performance left him fourth on the grid, having come agonisingly close to improving his position but finishing four tenths behind Verstappen.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton faced a disappointing day, concluding his qualifying session without a podium finish for the first time in his career. Following significant damage from a crash in final practice, Hamilton recorded his third straight early exit and lamented his performance, apologising to his team as he finished at the bottom of the pack.

Hamilton struggled in Q1, stating his lap “felt good” but ended the session apologising after Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto advanced to Q2, leaving Hamilton for an early exit. His teammate Charles Leclerc qualified fifth, illustrating a stark contrast as Hamilton has been out-qualified 19 times in 24 races this season.

The stage is now set in Abu Dhabi for a climactic showdown, encapsulating the intensity and unpredictability that characterise Formula 1 racing. The final race not only tests technical prowess but also nerves and strategy, ensuring all eyes will be on the track as championship stakes are on the line.
