Kyrgios discusses physical condition after early exit from Australian Open doubles

Nick Kyrgios updates on his physical state after Australian Open exit

Nick Kyrgios has provided an update on his body after exiting the Australian Open doubles in the opening round, reports BritPanorama.

The Australian expressed fatigue following his defeat, stating, “I’m tired. Yeah, I mean, I’ve done a lot of travel. I mean, I haven’t really played any official tournaments.” He detailed that his recent objectives centred around competing at Melbourne Park with his doubles partner.

Kyrgios reflected on his goals, saying, “My goal in the last couple [of] months was to play all these events and to get through the Australian Open playing some doubles with Thanasi. There’s no one else I’d really want to play with, to be honest.” Although he confirmed plans to compete in mixed doubles with Leylah Fernandez, he acknowledged that his fatigue could impact his performance.

Their upcoming opponents in mixed doubles are world number nine Neal Skupski and American Desirae Krawczyk. Kyrgios noted, “I have mixed tomorrow. Then reevaluate what my schedule looks like. I’ve ticked all my boxes, all my goals the last month and a half. I’ve done everything I thought I could do. I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

Notably, the duo—the Special Ks, as they are popularly known—saw their ambitions for the men’s doubles crown dashed by fellow Australians Max Purcell and Matt Reid, who proved too strong despite expectations of Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis dominating the encounter.

Both players have suffered injury challenges for an extended period, hindering their ability to compete in the singles draw, despite their initial intentions. The early exit has intensified disappointment among local supporters, who hoped for a strong showing. There are ongoing concerns about whether Kyrgios’s body will meet the physical demands of continued competition, particularly in light of his evident exhaustion.

Questions linger regarding his ability to perform well in the upcoming mixed doubles match. These challenges are compounded by his recent expression of frustration over officiating during the decisive super tiebreak, where a pivotal point was overturned after replays indicated a violation by Kokkinakis. This incident has further stirred discussions about Kyrgios’s focus and motivation moving forward.

Fans remain hopeful for Kyrgios’s swift recovery and a potential return to showcasing the talent that once made him a captivating figure on the court. However, his recent performances raise reasonable doubts about his current state and future trajectory in professional tennis.

As the tournaments unfold, one can’t help but ponder the intricate interplay of health, talent, and resolve. Kyrgios’s journey serves as a reminder of how quickly aspirations can shift on the grand stage of tennis.
