Killer of Henry Nowak referred to Court of Appeal over lenient sentence

Vickrum Digwa, convicted of murdering 18-year-old university student Henry Nowak, has been referred to the Court of Appeal, following public outrage over his sentence being considered too lenient, reports BritPanorama.

Digwa was sentenced to life in prison on June 1, 2025, with a minimum term of 21 years for the murder that took place in December 2024. The case has sparked significant controversy due to perceived inadequacies in the punishment given the severity of the crime.

Solicitor General Ellie Reeves has expressed her dismay, noting that the case “horrified” her and resonated with widespread public sentiment. In light of the uproar, several high-profile figures, including Reform UK chief Nigel Farage, have called for a review of the sentence under the Unduly Lenient Sentence (ULS) scheme. This referral to the Court of Appeal marks a formal response to those concerns.

Ms. Reeves stated, “It is right that difficult questions need to be answered about the way the police handled Henry’s Nowak’s murder, while my role is to review Digwa’s sentence for his crimes.” The judges will now assess whether the original sentence was indeed unduly lenient and may consider extending the term imposed on Digwa.

The public’s reaction highlights a broader concern regarding justice in similar cases, with many advocating for more stringent penalties for violent crime. As the legal process unfolds, the implications for sentencing guidelines and public trust in the judicial system remain critical points of discussion.

The tragic loss of Henry Nowak continues to reverberate, underscoring the complexities of justice and the necessity for accountability in the wake of violence. As this case progresses, it sheds light on how society grapples with the balance between punishment and rehabilitation in the realm of serious crimes.
