Mohamed Salah faces criticism for silence after Liverpool defeat

Mohamed Salah has been criticised by Jamie Carragher for not speaking to the media following Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, reports BritPanorama.

The former Liverpool player turned pundit expressed that the Egyptian forward should assume greater responsibility, highlighting that Salah had been vocal about his contract situation last season before signing a new deal in April. Carragher’s comments follow a match in which Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool’s captain, addressed the media, a role typically expected of team leaders.

“After the Forest game, Virgil van Dijk has come out and spoken, as he should do as the captain,” Carragher noted. “On the back of all these Liverpool defeats, it’s always Van Dijk who comes out and speaks. The captain should do that but there should be other players in that dressing room speaking for the club,” he added.

Carragher contrasted this with Salah, mentioning, “A year ago this weekend, Mo Salah wasn’t shy in speaking about his own situation and the club not offering him a contract.” The expectation of leadership from Salah has intensified amid a challenging season, where he has scored just four goals and provided two assists in 12 league matches, a stark contrast to his previous season’s success where he won the Premier League’s Golden Boot and played a pivotal role in securing the title for Liverpool.

The defeat to Nottingham Forest marked Liverpool’s largest loss at Anfield during the Premier League era, pushing them 11 points adrift of league leaders Arsenal, which has inevitably increased the pressure on manager Arne Slot. Carragher suggested that despite the current struggles, Slot should not be at risk of losing his position after delivering the title in his inaugural season, though supporters’ sentiments have curiously shifted.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher remarked, “No, not in my mind at any time through this season. But I must say, some of the people I spoke to after the Forest game – fans, friends, family – and how they spoke about Slot shocked me a little bit.” He further expressed respect for Slot’s achievements, stating, “There is huge respect for what he did last season. To win the title in your first season is pretty special.” However, he observed a difference in support compared to Jürgen Klopp, noting, “I have the feeling that he doesn’t have the unconditional love and support that Jürgen Klopp always had.”

Such observations underline the complex dynamics within the club as players’ performances and management decisions are scrutinised following disappointing results, prompting discussions of accountability and leadership in a high-pressure environment.

As the campaign unfolds, Liverpool’s challenges reflect the fine margins between success and struggle, reminding fans and pundits alike of the relentless nature of Premier League football.
