Herbie Hide faces assault allegations involving police officer

Former world heavyweight boxing champion Herbie Hide is facing allegations that he struck a plainclothes police officer at his residence, reports BritPanorama.

The 54-year-old ex-fighter, who earned the nickname “Dancing Destroyer” during his professional career, is charged with assaulting a constable in the execution of his duty. The incident is said to have occurred on July 3, 2024, at Hide’s gated home on Long Lane in Bawburgh, situated on the outskirts of Norwich.

When asked how he wished to respond to the charge at Norwich Magistrates’ Court, Hide declared himself “definitely not guilty.” He has been released on unconditional bail and is scheduled to face trial on December 9. Prosecutors claim that officers who were not in uniform arrived at the property that day in an unmarked vehicle, and it was alleged that Hide punched one officer in the face as he returned to the car.

According to the prosecution, the officer who was struck had not disclosed his identity as a police constable to Hide. The confrontation reportedly began after the plainclothes officers gained access to Hide’s secured property, culminating in the alleged assault as one officer was departing.

Magistrates expressed regret over the scheduling delays due to ongoing backlogs within the court system. Speaking directly to the magistrates, Hide recounted an encounter with a man he did not recognize, who entered his home and spoke to his children. His solicitor, Ian Fisher, implored the court to consider the situation from Hide’s perspective, arguing that any householder might feel threatened by the presence of individuals who did not identify themselves or explain their intentions.

Defence arguments centre on the claim that the officers failed to disclose their identities or purposes for being present on Hide’s property. Hide, whose birth name is Herbert Okechukwu Maduagwu, originally hails from Nigeria and later moved to Norfolk, where he spent his formative years.

Having achieved notable success in the boxing ring, Hide rose to prominence by capturing the World Boxing Organisation heavyweight title in 1994, defeating Michael Bentt. He reclaimed the championship again in 1997 after overcoming Tony Tucker, maintaining the title until 1999. An enduring highlight of his career was a record-setting match in 1998, where he defeated American challenger Damon Reed in under a minute — a performance still frequently recalled in boxing discussions today.
