Djokovic aims for 25th Grand Slam title against Alcaraz at Australian Open final

Djokovic’s message after defeating Sinner

After defying the odds to beat Jannik Sinner in their blockbuster semi-final clash at the Australian Open on Friday, Novak Djokovic had a message for his critics, reports BritPanorama.

“I never stopped doubting,” said the 38-year-old after sending Sinner, the defending champion and world No 2, crashing out. “I never stopped believing in myself.”

Djokovic now stands on the brink of tennis immortality. If he manages to overcome Carlos Alcaraz at the Rod Laver Arena on Sunday, he’ll move ahead of Margaret Court to achieve a historic 25 Grand Slam titles. He already has more majors than any other male player, competing against formidable foes such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray, marking his journey as no small feat.

His comments indicate that retirement is not on his mind at present. Djokovic’s resolve suggests he remains committed to the sport, further fueled by the doubts cast against him by others. “There’s a lot of people that doubt me,” he noted, acknowledging the experts who have speculated about his retirement statuses in recent years. He expressed gratitude to those critics: “They gave me strength. They gave me motivation to prove them wrong.”

If victorious against Alcaraz, who is currently ranked world No 1, it’s imperative to consider what Djokovic will aim for next. He holds a record of ten Australian Open titles, a feat that may remain unchallenged irrespective of how long Alcaraz and Sinner compete. At the French Open, Djokovic solidified his legacy with three titles, particularly in a period dominated by Nadal’s clay-court prowess.

Wimbledon could be the major that stirs Djokovic the most, as he tracks two less than Federer’s eight titles there. Having faced disappointments in recent finals, Djokovic may feel a pull to reclaim supremacy at the All England Club. The US Open presents another target, although its priority for him is less clear, with his four crowns there a testament to his achievements.

He plays not only for titles but also for his passion for the sport. Despite signs of decline in 2024 and 2025, Djokovic’s performance this winter reveals he still possesses considerable ability. While Alcaraz enters the showdown as the favourite with heightened confidence, Djokovic’s history speaks to the unpredictable nature of competition. In the end, it’s less about what lies ahead and more about whether Djokovic can conjure the magic that has defined his career one last time.
