Liverpool’s Curtis Jones expresses despair after heavy defeat to PSV Eindhoven

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones delivered an extraordinary outburst following Wednesday’s crushing 4-1 home defeat to PSV Eindhoven, declaring the team are “in the s***”, reports BritPanorama.

The 24-year-old academy product could barely contain his emotions while speaking to Irish broadcaster RTE after the Champions League humiliation at Anfield. “I don’t have the answers. Honestly, I don’t. I’m saying that to everybody. It’s just unacceptable,” Jones admitted. His frustration boiled over as he struggled to articulate his feelings about the club’s alarming decline.

Wednesday’s capitulation marked Liverpool’s ninth defeat in just twelve matches across all competitions, representing a staggering collapse for the reigning Premier League champions. This latest loss means the team has now suffered three successive defeats by a three-goal margin for the first time since 1953, further emphasising the dire state of affairs.

Jones expressed disbelief at witnessing such a dramatic downturn for a club he has supported all his life. “In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team going through a period like this with results like these,” he stated, echoing the sentiments of many fans disheartened by the current performance levels.

In his harsh critique, Jones called for his teammates to show greater physicality and aggression. “It starts with just being a man out there and just wanting to tackle someone and just be a dog out there,” he explained during a separate television appearance on CBS Sports. He dismissed any notion that Liverpool’s technical play should preclude physical confrontation, insisting, “Just go and smash someone.” The midfielder also acknowledged his own culpability, recognising the need for all players to demand more from one another.

As Liverpool struggle, they now face the reality that opposing teams arrive at Anfield expecting victory rather than fearing what used to be a fortress. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher responded critically to Jones’ remarks, urging him to take responsibility. “When he says ‘we need to put a tackle in, we need to get closer to the ball’… who’s stopping you? The only thing someone can’t stop you doing is running. No one can stop you tackling, running and pressing,” Carragher insisted.

Meanwhile, manager Arne Slot confirmed he feels secure in his position despite the team’s struggles, stating, “I am feeling safe, I am okay, I have got a lot of support from above,” following discussions with Liverpool’s American owners. The scrutiny surrounding Slot’s management is inevitable given the team’s dire form, but he remains resolute about his future.

Liverpool’s Champions League campaign continues with fixtures against Inter Milan, Marseille, and Qarabag, yet Wednesday’s defeat leaves them outside the competition’s top eight positions. The path forward is fraught with challenges, reminding everyone that in football, decorum and determination often dictate the difference between glory and despair.
