Cristiano Ronaldo hints at potential return to European football

Cristiano Ronaldo has suggested he could make a surprising comeback to European football as he pursues his ambition of scoring 1,000 career goals, reports BritPanorama.

The Portuguese forward, now 40, has accumulated 956 goals throughout his career following a double for Al-Nassr over the weekend. Speaking at the Globe Soccer Awards ceremony in Dubai on Sunday, where he received the Best Middle East Player accolade, Ronaldo indicated he remains open to a potential move.

A return to European competition would represent a remarkable development given his age and the fact he is currently in his fourth campaign with the Saudi Arabian club. His record-breaking £492 million contract with Al-Nassr is set to conclude a year after this summer’s World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Despite approaching the twilight of his career, Ronaldo remains determined to continue playing professional football beyond his current deal. The veteran striker has already confirmed that the 2026 tournament will mark his final appearance on the international stage with Portugal.

At the Dubai ceremony, Ronaldo expressed enthusiasm for the sport, stating, “My passion is high and I want to continue. It doesn’t matter where I play, whether in the Middle East or Europe.” He emphasized his love for football, saying, “I always enjoy playing football and I want to keep going.”

His pursuit of the historic 1,000-goal milestone continues to drive his motivation to extend his playing days. Regarding that target, Ronaldo expressed supreme confidence in achieving it: “I will reach the number for sure, if no injuries,” he remarked, underlining his belief that only physical setbacks could prevent him from reaching this historic goal.

Ronaldo’s illustrious European career saw him represent four major clubs across the continent before his move to Saudi Arabia. He began his professional journey at Sporting Lisbon, enjoyed two separate spells at Manchester United, spent nine seasons at Real Madrid, and had a period with Italian giants Juventus. Despite hinting at a possible return to Europe, the Portuguese icon appears to be putting down roots in the Middle East.

Reports indicate he has recently purchased two luxury properties on the exclusive Red Sea island of Nujuma, spending a combined £7 million on the homes. The private island, accessible only by boat or seaplane, sits approximately 800 miles from Riyadh where he currently plays. As the football world watches, it remains to be seen whether Ronaldo’s ambition will drive him back to European shores before he hangs up his boots.
