Chloe Kelly reflects on a transformative year

Chloe Kelly has spoken about her “really good headspace” following a mental health battle, stating that she will be “eternally grateful” for her BBC Sport Personality of the Year nomination, reports BritPanorama.

The 27-year-old forward faced challenges at Manchester City, where she spent time on the bench and dealt with severe mental health issues that led to an alopecia diagnosis last year. As 2025 began, she feared for her position within the Lionesses squad after losing favour at her previous club.

However, in January, Kelly’s fortunes shifted upon her return to Arsenal, the club where she made her professional debut. By May, she celebrated a Champions League victory with the Gunners, followed by the Lionesses successfully defending their European Championship title.

Describing 2025 as “a year of learning, smiles and silverware,” Kelly reflected on her achievements, stating, “It’s been a year of learnings, a year of success and a year of smiles.” With the Champions League medal under her belt, she acknowledged that competing in the Euros was her initial goal for the year.

“I didn’t aim to win the Champions League at the start of the year; my aim was to be at the Euros and be competing with my country,” Kelly explained, underscoring how unexpected triumphs can redefine ambitions.

Winning the Champions League was a significant moment for Kelly, who added, “Being selected for the Euros was so special to me and then winning it – incredible moments for my country.” She described the honour of wearing the England shirt and playing alongside talented teammates, reinforcing her pride in representing her country.

Kelly played a pivotal role in both Arsenal’s and England’s successes last season. She notably scored an extra-time winner in the Euro 2025 semi-finals against Italy and successfully converted a penalty during the shoot-out in the final against Spain.

Alongside her England teammate Hannah Hampton, Kelly is nominated for the BBC SPOTY award, competing against high-profile sports figures such as Women’s Rugby World Cup champion Ellie Kildunne, world darts champion Luke Littler, Masters winner Rory McIlroy, and Formula One world champion Lando Norris.

With the potential for yet another accolade in 2025, Kelly’s journey highlights the resilience required to navigate personal challenges while achieving success on the pitch. In reflecting on her experiences, she embodies the spirit of perseverance that resonates throughout sport, reminding fans of the relentless pursuit of excellence amidst adversity.
