Chelsea withdraw from pursuit of Antoine Semenyo

Chelsea have withdrawn from the pursuit of Antoine Semenyo after making an initial enquiry about the Bournemouth winger on Tuesday, reports BritPanorama.

The west London club checked the conditions required to complete a deal for the 25-year-old but have decided against advancing their interest further. David Ornstein of The Athletic confirmed that Chelsea would not be proceeding with a move for the Ghana international.

The enquiry came just days before the January transfer window opens, with Semenyo emerging as one of the most sought-after attackers in the Premier League this winter. Chelsea’s decision stems from confidence in Enzo Maresca’s current attacking options.

Rather than moving quickly to solidify a transfer for Semenyo, Chelsea intends to focus on strengthening their squad next summer. Instead of following up their enquiry with a formal bid, the Blues plan to prioritise rewarding existing players across their team. Wage demands also significantly influenced Chelsea’s decision to step back from the deal.

Semenyo’s salary is likely to be determined by competing offers from interested clubs. Chelsea has made it clear they will not deviate from their established wage structure for any player. His release clause stands at £65 million, which includes a guaranteed £60 million fee and £5 million in achievable add-ons, but clubs have a limited window to activate this clause, which expires on January 10.

This deadline is designed to give Bournemouth sufficient time to secure a replacement. Manchester United are reported to be planning an all-out effort to sign the forward when the window opens, having previously approached the Cherries in the summer with an unsuccessful bid. Manchester City and Liverpool have also expressed their interest, with Liverpool’s sporting director having originally brought Semenyo to Bournemouth from Bristol City in a deal worth around £12 million.

The Ghanaian forward has enjoyed an outstanding campaign, netting eight goals and providing three assists in 16 Premier League appearances this season. His impressive form follows last season’s tally of 11 goals, marking him as one of the division’s most exciting wide players. Tottenham had registered their interest in Semenyo, but the forward is understood to have no desire to move to Spurs in January. If Manchester City succeeds in securing his signature, Tottenham could revert to their pursuit of Savinho, a target during the summer window. Bristol City is entitled to 20 percent of any profit made on their former player.

This saga highlights not just Chelsea’s strategic reconsideration but the shifting dynamics of the transfer market as clubs evaluate their priorities ahead of the January window. The pursuit of players like Semenyo serves as a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in football, with clubs increasingly focusing on long-term value over immediate recruitment.
