Celtic and Rangers have been hit with disciplinary charges after their Scottish Cup clash, with a report concluding that “crushing” and “life-threatening violence” were narrowly avoided, leading to 37 arrests and injuries sustained by police officers and stewards, reports BritPanorama.
One steward is still undergoing treatment for an inner ear injury inflicted by a masked Rangers fan. Event consultant Mark Blackbourne noted that police and stewards were “overwhelmed” by Celtic ultras in an “already overcrowded area,” posing a “real and foreseeable crushing risk.”
The situation escalated further with “masked home fans armed with poles and reinforced gloves,” coming close to a violent mass confrontation. These incidents highlighted a period where police had “four minutes 28 seconds to re-establish control,” during which time life-threatening violence was possible.
The report also indicated incidents of sectarian chanting, pyrotechnics, and objects being thrown at players and officials. Planning failures were identified, notably influenced by a 10-day delay in confirming over 8,000 tickets in the away allocation.
The findings included more than 30 recommendations, particularly calling for alignment between the Scottish Football Association (SFA) and the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) in terms of sanctioning. While Celtic has disputed certain aspects of the report, Rangers expressed concerns regarding “significant elements.” However, Rangers accepted responsibility “for the areas within the club’s control” and intends to implement recommendations.
In a statement, Rangers indicated it would support measures for “stronger national coordination, structured supporter involvement, and more effective legislative powers.” They stressed the need for effective legal frameworks to address serious misconduct related to football, particularly advocacy for the recognition of tragedies and historical abuse related to football incidents.
Celtic chairman Brian Wilson stated that the club had previously conveyed strong objections to essential matchday planning elements ahead of the contest. While tensions between the clubs remain high, the ongoing discussions indicate an appetite for improvement in safety protocols and fan management.
