Dortmund backs Jobe Bellingham despite challenges

Borussia Dortmund have opted to stand firmly behind Jobe Bellingham, according to fresh reports, despite the 20-year-old enduring a challenging introduction to German football since his summer arrival, reports BritPanorama.

The club’s leadership has reportedly resolved against pursuing a central midfield signing during the January transfer window, signalling their confidence in Bellingham’s potential.

This decision follows Dortmund’s confirmation of Pascal Gross’s return to Brighton on Friday. Chief executive Lars Ricken, sporting director Sebastian Kehl, and manager Niko Kovac have collectively determined that Bellingham should be given the opportunity to establish himself in the position, according to German publication Bild.

The England Under-21 international completed a £32 million switch from Sunderland last summer, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Jude. Bellingham’s playing time has been limited since arriving at Signal Iduna Park, managing only five league starts this season. Since September, he has been in the starting lineup for just three Bundesliga fixtures out of a possible 12 and rarely completes the full 90 minutes.

His latest outing ended in disappointment when he received a red card during Dortmund’s 1-1 stalemate with Freiburg in December, resulting in a two-match suspension. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel acknowledged that his distribution error contributed to the incident, leading to Bellingham’s dismissal.

Overall, Bellingham has featured 27 times for his new club, scoring only once against South Africa’s Sundowns in his second appearance. Earlier in the season, tension surfaced when Bellingham’s father, Mark, reportedly confronted club officials after a match regarding his son’s early removal from the pitch and the team’s lacklustre performance.

Following Dortmund’s 3-3 draw with St Pauli, Mark Bellingham engaged in a heated exchange with Kehl after Jobe was withdrawn at the interval. Reports indicate that Kehl responded by reminding all involved about access to restricted areas within the stadium.

Despite these early challenges, Dortmund’s hierarchy regard the younger Bellingham as a “training champion,” whose impressive work on the training ground is expected to translate into match performances as he gains confidence. Kovac has publicly defended Bellingham following the sending-off and commended his development trajectory since arriving from Wearside.

In a landscape where young players often face immense scrutiny, Dortmund’s commitment highlights a deliberate choice to nurture talent rather than swiftly replace it — a tactic that may yet pay dividends as Bellingham’s career unfolds in the Bundesliga.
