Anthony Joshua returns to the UK after fatal car accident
Anthony Joshua has arrived at London Stansted Airport following a car accident in Nigeria that resulted in the deaths of two members of his team, reports BritPanorama.
The 36-year-old heavyweight champion is now recuperating at home after sustaining minor injuries in the collision near Lagos on Monday. The crash occurred shortly after Joshua and his entourage arrived in Nigeria for a holiday as they were travelling in a Land Rover towards Sagamu to visit the boxer’s relatives.
Tragedy struck when a last-minute seat change placed Joshua in the back seat. Initially positioned in the front passenger seat, he moved to allow for better visibility, which ultimately placed him out of harm’s way during the crash. Latif “Latz” Ayodele, Joshua’s personal trainer, and strength coach Sina Ghami both suffered fatal injuries.
A janaza prayer service for the deceased is set for tomorrow at London Central Mosque, with family and close associates expected to attend. Whether Joshua will be present remains uncertain, amid concerns that his attendance might attract unwanted attention to the occasion.
The vehicle collided with a stationary lorry on what is regarded as Nigeria’s most dangerous road. The driver, 47-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged with multiple offenses, including causing death by dangerous driving. He pleaded not guilty in Sagamu High Court and was released on bail set at 5 million Naira (approximately £2,580).
In a defense statement, Kayode’s legal representative highlighted that his client contends the incident was an accident due to brake failure. Kayode had reportedly worked as Joshua’s driver for over three years. His son, Ifeoluwa Adeniyi, spoke in his father’s defense, attributing the accident to the illegal parking of the lorry that was struck.
Kayode’s trial is scheduled for January 20. The tragic event not only underscores the risks inherent in travel but also the fragility of life — a stark reminder of how quickly circumstances can shift. In the sporting arena, such moments often resonate beyond the immediate, echoing in the lives they touch.
