Anthony Joshua recovers after tragic car accident
Anthony Joshua has made what has been described as a “miracle recovery” following a fatal car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his friends, reports BritPanorama.
The 36-year-old former world heavyweight champion sustained no fractures and has been discharged from hospital, according to a Government statement. He is currently recuperating at his Nigerian home.
Joshua was involved in the crash while travelling with a hired driver. He initially reported severe knee pain and was heard crying out as rescuers pulled him from the wrecked Lexus SUV. Medical staff at the Duchess International Hospital in Lagos treated him before confirming he was fit to recover at home.
The two deceased, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, were seated on the opposite side of the vehicle and died on impact. Ghami served as Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele was a close aide who frequently accompanied the boxer. The bodies are being prepared for repatriation to the UK, with the process scheduled to begin after Joshua and his mother visited a Lagos funeral home.
Nigerian authorities have linked the crash to a burst tire. A Federal Road Safety Corps source indicated that preliminary reports reveal the driver exceeded speed limits and overtook dangerously. These offenses are considered serious under Nigerian law and can carry criminal liability if fatalities occur. The driver involved in the collision has already given a statement to police, and local media suggest he may face prosecution for reckless driving. The lorry driver who collided with Joshua’s SUV fled the scene, prompting an active search by Nigerian police.
In the wake of the incident, tributes have poured in for Ghami and Ayodele, including messages from fellow boxers like Tyson Fury, who have expressed their condolences. The tragic event underscores the fragile nature of life, even for those who seem invincible in the ring, a reminder of the unpredictable intersections between personal and professional realms.
