Andy Robertson to leave Liverpool after nine years
Liverpool has announced that Andy Robertson will depart the club when his contract expires this summer, bringing to a close nine years at Anfield, reports BritPanorama.
The 32-year-old Scotland captain has made 373 appearances for Liverpool, earning the title of “a genuine Liverpool legend” from the club. His contributions have been pivotal in securing multiple trophies during his tenure.
In a video announcing his decision, Robertson stated, “I think now’s the time for me to move on,” reflecting on his time with the club by saying, “The nine years I’ll look back on with a big smile on my face.”
His achievements include two Premier League titles and a Champions League victory, alongside other accolades such as the FA Cup, two League Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and the Community Shield. Liverpool’s acquisition of Robertson from Hull City in 2017 for £8 million has proven to be judicious given his significant impact on the team’s recent successes.
This season, however, Robertson’s playing time diminished following the club’s signing of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth. He made 31 appearances across all competitions but started only six Premier League matches. Tottenham pursued a transfer for the defender in January, which ultimately did not materialize as Liverpool could not recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma.
Despite the potential move, Robertson maintained his commitment to Liverpool, stating, “I’ve been committed to Liverpool for the last eight and a half or nine years now and I’ll be committed until I’m no longer needed.” He becomes the second notable departure announced by Liverpool this summer, following Mohamed Salah’s confirmation of his exit after a similar duration at the club.
While the club has indicated a celebration of Robertson’s contributions will take place only after the season concludes, they affirmed his focus remains on achieving success in the current campaign, reinforcing the sentiment, “This club has given me everything and I’ve given this club everything.” The evolution of Robertson’s career at Liverpool encapsulates the thrilling highs and the inevitable transitions that define football, reminding fans of the enduring connection between player and club.
