Andy Murray mourns loss of grandmother

Andy Murray is grieving the death of his grandmother Shirley Erskine, who passed away last week, just weeks after losing his grandfather Roy, reports BritPanorama.

Shirley’s death comes shortly after the passing of Roy, a former professional footballer who died at the age of 94 last month. His old club Stirling Albion confirmed his passing, marking a double blow for the Murray family.

In a heartfelt Instagram tribute, Ailsa Erskine, Andy Murray’s cousin and an actress, described her grandmother as “sweet, amazing, hilarious and one of a kind.” She shared that Shirley “lit up every room she walked into” and reminisced about her chatter along Dunblane High Street.

Ailsa expressed her deep sorrow, stating, “There will not be a day that goes by that I won’t think of her and take a little bit of her with me.” She reflected on the extraordinary life Shirley led, feeling fortunate to have had such an influential figure in her life.

The tribute also included an emotional farewell where Ailsa shared the many affectionate names she used for her grandmother, including “gran gran” and “my best friend.” She concluded with a poignant message asking Shirley to “say hi to Grandpa for me,” in reference to Roy’s recent death.

The loss of both grandparents has profoundly affected Andy and his brother Jamie, underscoring their close bond with their family, making this period particularly heartbreaking for them.

Roy Erskine began his football career at Hibernian in 1952 after completing his national service. He later joined Stirling Albion and Cowdenbeath, where he notably featured in 56 out of 57 matches during his tenure. Roy maintained a lifelong connection with Stirling Albion, attending the club as a guest as recently as 2023, highlighting the enduring impact he had on his community.

This chapter in the Murray family’s life serves as a reminder of the personal stories behind the public figures we follow, encapsulating the intertwining of sport and family in the most profound ways.
