Andrew Strauss remarries in South Africa

Sir Andrew Strauss has remarried, almost seven years to the day after the death of his first wife, in a private ceremony held in South Africa, reports BritPanorama.

The 48-year-old tied the knot with Antonia Linnaeus-Peat, 30, on December 17 in Franschhoek, a historic wine town in the Western Cape, close to where Strauss was born.

The ceremony took place at the La Clé vineyard, located about 50 miles east of Cape Town, with photographs revealing the couple surrounded by close family under clear skies and winter sunshine.

Strauss and his new wife, who have been together for approximately two years, were joined by his sons, Samuel and Luca, in what friends have described as a quietly joyful occasion.

The boys were aged 12 and 10 when their mother, Ruth, passed away on December 29, 2018, after battling a rare form of lung cancer. She was 46 and had received her diagnosis just over a year prior.

The wedding, organized by Mosaic Weddings and photographed by Celeste Prince, was intentionally intimate, with only family members invited, as Strauss confirmed on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast in November.

The timing of the ceremony also explains his absence during England’s ongoing Ashes campaign in Australia. Strauss and Ms Linnaeus-Peat were first seen together publicly two years ago after dining at an exclusive London restaurant, and they later appeared in the Royal Box at Wimbledon this summer.

Ms Linnaeus-Peat, previously a PR executive, is now a company director at Linnaeus Fine Art Advisory Limited. She was raised in Hong Kong and educated at St Mary’s Calne, an independent girls’ school in Wiltshire.

News of the marriage has been met with warm reactions from across the sporting world, where Strauss remains a respected figure, not only for his achievements on the field but also for his work following his wife’s death. In 2019, he founded the Ruth Strauss Foundation, which supports families facing parental loss due to lung cancer and funds research into non-smoking-related forms of the disease.

The charity has raised millions of pounds annually, with its “Red for Ruth” campaign becoming a staple of the English cricketing summer.

Strauss has openly discussed how grief has reshaped his priorities. In a 2023 interview, he reflected, “Our time is limited, and therefore I need to be more conscious about what I do and don’t do. This might mean experiencing things that weren’t appealing to me before, or saying no to things even though I don’t want to let people down. But most of all, it means keeping the people most important to me happy.”

He also advocates for greater openness surrounding bereavement. He described grief as “still far too much of a taboo”, adding, “It’s absurd, because we’re all going to be touched by death in life… otherwise there will be people devoid of support or knowledge.”

When announcing Ruth’s death in 2018, Strauss expressed admiration for her devotion to their family, saying, “Anyone who has met Ruth will know how loving, caring and passionately protective she was of her family.”

As Strauss embarks on this new chapter, the resilience reflected in his journey and the support he continues to provide for others facing similar struggles serves as a poignant reminder of life’s unpredictable nature and the threads of connection that bind us all.
