Prince Andrew renounces Duke of York title amid upcoming memoir release by Virginia Giuffre

Prince Andrew has announced the relinquishment of his Duke of York title after consulting with King Charles and other royal family members, a decision reportedly influenced by ongoing accusations that have marred his public reputation, reports BritPanorama.

In a statement on Friday evening, Andrew indicated that the persistent allegations against him detract from the royal family’s responsibilities. “In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family,” he stated.

He elaborated, stating, “I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.” With Charles’s agreement, Andrew confirmed he would no longer use his title or honours, which include his knighthoods as a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order and a knight of the Order of the Garter.

The decision purportedly has the support of the wider royal family, including Charles and the Prince of Wales. It aligns with efforts to maintain the monarchy’s integrity amid scandal.

Despite this setback, the changes will not affect Andrew’s living arrangements, as he will continue to reside at Royal Lodge in Windsor. While he has voluntarily given up most of his titles, he retains the title of prince, a status conferred upon him at birth as the son of a monarch.

Previously, Andrew stepped back from royal duties in 2019 following a controversial interview regarding his association with Jeffrey Epstein, who was convicted of sex trafficking. Virginia Giuffre, an Epstein victim, stated that she was sex-trafficked by him and has alleged that she was sexually exploited by Andrew. He has consistently denied her allegations.

After facing a civil lawsuit brought by Giuffre, Andrew reached an out-of-court settlement in early 2022, reportedly for millions of dollars. The fallout from these issues led to his being stripped of military titles and remaining royal responsibilities, a decision endorsed by his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Giuffre tragically took her own life in April 2025 in Western Australia, where she lived with her family. This week, Buckingham Palace’s announcement regarding Andrew’s title came as excerpts from Giuffre’s forthcoming memoir, which details her experiences, circulated in the press, rekindling public interest in Andrew’s past associations.

As the royal family prepares for King Charles and Queen Camilla’s upcoming historic visit to The Vatican, it appears that the timing of Andrew’s announcement was strategic, aimed at minimizing potential distractions from the monarchy’s engagements.
