Keir Starmer emphasizes need for energy security during Strait of Hormuz visit

Sir Keir Starmer has insisted there was “a lot of work to do” to secure oil and gas supplies through the Strait of Hormuz during his visit to the region, reports BritPanorama.

Amid a temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran, Starmer conveyed a sense of relief. The ceasefire aims to mitigate the recent energy price shock affecting households across the UK, which are grappling with rising costs. Speaking at an airbase in Saudi Arabia, Starmer remarked: “This ceasefire should not be temporary, but permanent.”

He highlighted the seriousness of the cost of living crisis, noting that families are facing higher-than-expected inflation this year along with surging fuel prices. “It’s already had an impact on the UK, and it’s very important we get the Strait of Hormuz open,” he stated, adding that there is significant work ahead to ensure stability in energy supplies.

Starmer emphasized his commitment to the UK’s national interests, responding to questions about his relationship with US President Donald Trump amid tensions over the use of British bases for potential military action against Iran. He asserted: “I’ve acted as you would expect of a British Prime Minister, which is by being absolutely focused on what is our national interest.”

Later in the visit, Starmer engaged in discussions with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. However, some critics, including Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, expressed doubts regarding the reception Starmer would receive, questioning the strength of the UK’s relationships with key partners in the region and the US, stating, “What’s he going to say? Our relationship with those parts of the world is weak and our relationship with America is fractured.”

This visit underscores the ongoing geopolitical complexities surrounding energy supplies and the UK’s role in securing them during periods of instability. The implications of the situation at the Strait of Hormuz resonate throughout the global economy, highlighting the critical intersections of politics, security, and energy resources.
