Keir Starmer resigns as Labour leader, passing the baton to Andy Burnham
Sir Keir Starmer has stepped down as prime minister, describing his tenure as “the privilege of my life,” as he makes way for incoming leader Andy Burnham, elected to the role on Friday, reports BritPanorama.
Starmer’s departure comes after a record short premiership of just 745 days, making him the shortest-serving Labour prime minister in history. He announced his resignation on Monday morning, stating he would visit His Majesty the King to formally tender his resignation.
In his remarks, Starmer noted improvements in the UK’s economy and a significant reduction in immigration since taking office in 2024. He emphasized the strides made in public services, declaring that waiting times had decreased to their lowest in 17 years, and children were being lifted out of poverty daily.
