Sales of basic mobile phones surge in the UK

Sales of basic mobile phones, which assist individuals in digitally detoxifying, have surged over the past year, according to a buy now pay later provider, reports BritPanorama.

Clearpay indicated a 24% increase in the volume of “dumbphone” sales for the 12 months ending June 12, 2026, compared to the previous year.

These basic phones typically lack features like cameras and apps, making them appealing to those looking to reduce screen time.

A survey commissioned by Clearpay revealed that nearly two-thirds (62%) of parents whose children already own a smartphone have contemplated using technology to restrict their children’s access to social media and the internet.

The poll, conducted in August among 2,000 UK parents with children aged 11 to 17, highlighted a growing concern among parents. Rich Bayer, chief executive of Clearpay, noted, “Our sales data indicates a shift in how families are thinking about online access on mobile phones.”

For many parents, practical reasons underpin the decision to provide a phone for their child; 68% cited the ability to maintain contact when apart. Furthermore, over a third (37%) of parents reported their desire to limit their own screen time.

Significantly, 60% expressed support for a social media ban for those under 16, reflecting broader societal trends aimed at protecting younger users.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Andy Burnham reiterated his commitment to a robust social media ban for minors, asserting that there will be “no watering down” of the planned measures.

The increasing interest in basic mobile phones signifies a re-evaluation of digital engagement strategies among families, as well as the ongoing discourse regarding the balance between technology and wellbeing.
