Home Secretary outlines plans to prevent entry of foreign extremists into the UK
Islamist hate preachers will be stopped from entering Britain under new plans to crack down on extremism, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is promising to prevent foreign extremists “ever setting foot on UK soil”, reports BritPanorama.
She is set to unveil her strategy to expand the country’s visa task force next week. This initiative is part of a broader social cohesion strategy aimed at addressing and reducing community tensions.
Mahmood stated, “Foreign extremists must not be allowed to enter our country and spread their hateful views.” She emphasized her commitment to ensuring safety for citizens, declaring, “I will always take the necessary action to protect our citizens.” The global visa task force is designed to ensure that extremists cannot access the UK.
This task force conducts thorough assessments to identify and disrupt individuals classified as extremists, including Islamist hate preachers and neo-Nazis. Information gathered through this initiative is relayed to specialists within the Home Office, enabling the cancellation or refusal of visas for those attempting to travel to the UK.
Initially launched as a pilot programme in 2024, the scheme has proven effective, having prevented hundreds of extremists from entering the country. It is now set to become a permanent fixture, receiving an additional £5 million in funding and expanding its global operations.
By bolstering its visa task force, the UK government aims not only to enhance national security but also to foster a more inclusive and cohesive society.
This move signals a significant commitment to combating extremism in all its forms and reflects ongoing concerns regarding community safety and social harmony within the UK.
The effectiveness of such measures will depend on rigorous implementation and sustained political will to ensure the safety of citizens while upholding the country’s democratic values.
