Labour councils warn against schoolchildren depicting Prophet Mohammed in artwork

Labour councils label children’s artwork blasphemous under Islamic law

Labour councils in northern England have indicated that artwork created by schoolchildren could be deemed blasphemous under Islamic law. They issued guidance to teachers, advising against allowing pupils to create images of the Prophet Mohammed, reports BritPanorama.

The guidance states that “three-dimensional imagery of humans is considered idolatrous by some Muslims.” It emphasizes the importance of schools being mindful of this sentiment, specifically cautioning against asking students to reproduce images of significant religious figures such as Jesus or Mohammed.

This advisory aims to raise “sensitivity around faiths and beliefs” within educational institutions. Tory Shadow Equalities Minister Claire Coutinho responded critically, asserting that Labour’s definition of Islamophobia could inadvertently create what she termed a “back-door blasphemy law.”

Coutinho further remarked, “Guidance is being issued that says primary school children shouldn’t draw pictures that could be considered ‘blasphemous’. We must never have blasphemy laws in Britain.” She argued that granting special protections to a specific group undermines the shared identity of British society and could foster resentment.

These developments reflect an ongoing debate regarding the balance between cultural sensitivity and freedom of expression in British educational contexts. As discussions continue, the implications of such guidance for both educators and students remain to be seen.

In navigating this complex issue, it becomes essential to consider the nuanced interplay between respecting diverse beliefs and upholding the foundational values of a democratic society.
