Keir Starmer pledges to dismantle migrant smuggling networks in Western Balkans summit

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has pledged to dismantle the “criminal highway” traversing the Western Balkans that is contributing to an influx of migrants into the UK. Starmer’s statement comes as he prepares to host regional leaders today in an effort to disrupt the smuggling networks responsible for the increasing number of dangerous Channel crossings, reports BritPanorama.

During the summit, the UK government plans to propose the establishment of return hubs aimed at addressing the migrant crisis. However, a government source indicated that tackling regional criminality and enhancing border security are prerequisites for any effective agreements.

Starmer emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “There is a criminal highway leading through the Western Balkans, driving illegal migrants straight to the UK. Our task is to shut it down and smash the gangs that run it.”

The Prime Minister’s comments coincided with a backlash against certain political figures who have criticized foreign nations like Albania rather than seeking collaborative solutions. This was perceived as a pointed reference to Reform leader Nigel Farage’s disputes with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama.

To combat smuggling, the UK is deploying drones at strategic checkpoints throughout the Balkans. According to officials from the Home Office, approximately a quarter of small boat arrivals in the UK are believed to originate from this route.
