Shabana Mahmood responds to heckler during live podcast
The Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, reacted defiantly to a heckler who accused her of emulating Reform during a live podcast hosted by left-wing comedian Matt Forde in London’s West End. In a robust exchange, she told the heckler to “f*** right off,” asserting her identity and position in UK politics, reports BritPanorama.
During the event, an audience member expressed gratitude to Mahmood for seemingly aligning with Reform’s policies. Following this, two other attendees shouted supportive slogans about welcoming refugees while security personnel removed the heckler.
In her spirited rebuttal, Mahmood emphasised that she refuses to be placed “in a box,” asserting her right to express her views. She stated, “That’s why I said this individual can just f*** right off, because I know I belong in my own country.”
Mahmood addressed the implication of racism in the heckler’s claim, contending that it reflects a presumption about her identity. She elaborated, “I do think there is that element of it, which is: ‘How dare you, a brown woman, say a thing that we white liberals think you’re not allowed to say?’ Well I’m saying it.”
She further accused the audience of attempting to “delegitimise” the “perfectly valid” concerns many British citizens have regarding immigration, which she asserted is often dismissed by leftist critics. Mahmood remarked that such criticism seeks to undermine her perspectives while boxing her into narratives dictated by others.
Continuing her response, she refuted the notion that her views mirror those of Reform, insisting that such assertions seek to invalidate her contributions. “And also, you’re trying to put me in a box, which includes a lot of people who think I don’t even belong in my own country,” she declared.
Mahmood highlighted the underlying racism she perceives in these interactions, stating, “I’m not going to let a tin-pot racist or some random heckler or anybody else claw away at the foundations of who I am as a person.” She reiterated her pride in being a Brit and a Muslim as central to her identity.
