Ed Sheeran apologises to fans amid tour controversy
Ed Sheeran issued a tearful apology to fans during his concert in Philadelphia on Saturday night, following a week of chaos surrounding his tour, reports BritPanorama.
Sheeran became embroiled in controversy when his support act, rapper Macklemore, was dropped from the tour due to pro-Palestinian remarks made on stage. Following this, Sheeran’s other opening acts withdrew, prompting protests outside Saturday’s show.
At Lincoln Financial Field, Sheeran addressed the criticism directly, saying, “I’ve had to take and make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes. I’m so, so sorry. I don’t want to disappoint fans.” He emphasised his desire for his music to reflect unity rather than division.
Sheeran continued, stating, “But this is a humanitarian issue. I cannot hide how I feel about it anymore. What happened in Israel, and at the music festival on October 7th was horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain. What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate.”
His heartfelt comments came amid a significant public backlash, following his decision to dismiss Macklemore. Sheeran expressed how the devastation and loss of civilian lives had broken his heart, stating, “the systemic injustice we’re seeing unfolding in the West Bank cannot be overlooked.”
In his first public comments since addressing Macklemore’s removal on social media, Sheeran insisted that honouring commitments to his fans is central to his identity. “And that is why I’m here tonight, on my own, and continuing my current tour,” he added.
The concert’s start time was pushed from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. due to the withdrawals of his support acts, which also affected ticket prices on resale platforms.
Earlier in the week, Macklemore revealed he was dropped from the remaining U.S. tour dates after Sheeran reportedly received a call from Robert Kraft, who advised against performing at certain venues.
After Sheeran stated he would not engage publicly regarding the Gaza conflict, several acts, including Irish artists Aaron Rowe and Beoga, as well as Danish band Lukas Graham, announced their exit from the tour. Rowe had been slated to fill in for Macklemore, while Beoga served as Sheeran’s band.
The controversy escalated as Macklemore announced his intention to donate $1 million from his tour earnings to Palestinian aid groups, simultaneously challenging Kraft to match the donation. Kraft and Sheeran subsequently pledged $2 million towards humanitarian relief for Palestinians.
Protests on Saturday night saw demonstrators gather outside the concert venue, chanting, “F*** your concert, f*** your fans. Palestine is our demand,” reflecting the heightened tensions around the event.
Sheeran is scheduled for his next performance on September 25 at Kraft’s Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts.
