David Lammy criticized for insisting on being called Deputy PM, amid backlash over prisoner release scandal

David Lammy faces allegations of arrogance over title demands

David Lammy has been accused of insisting that officials address him as “Deputy PM,” leading to accusations of “astonishing arrogance,” reports BritPanorama.

Senior sources within Whitehall describe Lammy’s conduct as “haughty and entitled,” asserting that he lacks the common touch exhibited by previous officials in similar roles.

Team Lammy has denied the charges, stating that officials use the title of Deputy PM in recognition of his position. Critics, however, argue that the insistence on such a title is indicative of a misplaced sense of entitlement.

Amid the controversy, Lammy has faced increased scrutiny over his handling of a foreign prisoner release scandal, where he has been accused of misleading Parliament during last week’s Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs). He was asked multiple times about the release of another foreign criminal but did not provide a clear answer, despite later reports confirming that Algerian national Brahim Kaddour-Cherif had been released and was at large.

Lammy, also the Justice Secretary, is scheduled to return to the House of Commons on Tuesday to address these concerns. Pressure is mounting within government circles for him to issue a public apology regarding his responses during PMQs.

The timing of his return coincides with Remembrance Day, a context that adds further scrutiny following previous criticism for not wearing a poppy in related parliamentary proceedings.

Lammy was appointed Deputy PM during a September reshuffle, a role previously held by Angela Rayner, who resigned after failing to pay a substantial tax bill. The position of Deputy PM in Britain is not consistently filled; it is appointed at the discretion of the sitting Prime Minister.

In marked contrast to Lammy’s reported preferences, former Deputy PM Oliver Dowden was known to prefer being addressed simply as “Oliver” by colleagues, rather than insisting on his title.

In response to the allegations against him, Team Lammy contends that these criticisms stem from malevolent political motivations, emphasizing that officials have used the Deputy PM title since the outset of his appointment, similar to the previous administration.

The situation reflects ongoing tensions within the current government, underscoring the broader challenges faced by the Deputy PM in maintaining both authority and public trust.

This incident highlights the delicate balance required for political leaders in the UK, navigating public expectations amidst internal and external pressures.
