Conservative leader promises to eliminate low-quality degrees and boost apprenticeships

Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the Conservative Party, is set to announce a cap on degrees deemed ineffective, aiming to alleviate the financial burden on taxpayers. This announcement will be made today during her conference speech, where she will also propose limiting university courses that do not yield favorable outcomes for graduates, reallocating the funds to bolster apprenticeships, reports BritPanorama.

Badenoch’s initiative comes as taxpayers currently shoulder £7 billion annually in student debt that graduates are unable to repay. Her measures are designed to counteract this trend by targeting what she describes as “Mickey Mouse degrees” — courses that she asserts squander resources and potential.

In her speech, Badenoch will criticize the current educational framework for prioritizing low-quality courses over high-quality apprenticeships. She will advocate for a policy whereby a Conservative government would allocate half of all spending cuts towards reducing taxes, while the remaining half would be used to address the national debt.

Her proposal seeks to position the Conservatives as advocates for economic discipline in stark contrast to both the Labour Party and Reform UK, as her approval ratings have flagged. Badenoch aims to revive her political standing by emphasizing fiscal responsibility.

Addressing the ramifications of the existing financial system, she contends that Chancellor Rachel Reeves is perpetuating a “borrowing a tax doom loop” that exacerbates national debt. With Britain currently incurring £100 billion annually to cover interest payments on its debt — a figure surpassing the entire defense budget — Badenoch implies that the existing economic strategies are unsustainable.

In a critical stance, she will underscore the urgency of addressing the debt crisis to avoid “stealing from our children and grandchildren,” as she positions her party’s vision against the backdrop of current financial challenges. The focus on educational reform coupled with economic discipline aims to galvanize support among voters dissatisfied with the status quo.
